CLEP Natural Sciences

Does taking two introductory science courses sound like more trouble than it’s worth? You’re not alone. Every year, thousands of students opt to earn credit in college-level science through the CLEP Natural Science exam instead of taking courses in the same subjects.

The CLEP Natural Science test counts for six college credits because it is recognized by the American Council on Education, or ACE, to show that students have mastered the same amount of material they would have obtained by taking two lower division natural science courses.

Colleges and universities trust ACE’s credit recommendations and have determined that a student knows the subject well if they can pass a CLEP in it.

What You’ll Encounter on the CLEP Natural Science Exam

The CLEP Natural Science test covers a large body of basic science concepts but focuses a lot on the foundations of biology and cause/effect sequences in biological organisms. Even if a student is familiar with biological terminology, this typically isn’t enough to pass the exam. Additionally, this CLEP challenges students’ knowledge of basic chemistry and earth science.

In regard to the biology you’ll encounter on the CLEP Natural Science test, you should aim to understand how various organisms and parts of organisms interact with each other.

Molecular and cellular biology could comprise a big chunk of the biology-related questions on the exam. That means you’ll need to know the parts of a cell, their functions, and how things like enzymes interact with them.

The CLEP Natural Science test consists of 120 multiple choice questions and students are given a maximum of 90 minutes to complete the questions. Students who score 70% or higher are eligible to receive credit—and on the CLEP scoring scale, 70% equates to a final score of 50 or above.

How to Pass the CLEP Natural Science Exam

To earn a passing score on this CLEP test, you need a lot of repetition on terms related to biology, chemistry, and earth science. You also need to be challenged to consider the outcomes of various organisms and molecules interacting with each other. Other themes you’ll encounter on the exam relate to evolution, ecology, and very basic physics.
