CLEP American Literature Test: What to Prepare For

The CLEP American Literature exam tests students on concepts typically taught in two 100-level literature college courses. The CLEP American Literature test focuses on the student’s ability to recognize famous works in the American literary tradition in addition to testing the student’s ability to do basic interpretive analysis on some of the works highlighted.

The CLEP American Literature test comprises 120 multiple-choice questions and it must be completed in 90 minutes or less. Colleges accept the CLEP American Literature exam for college credit because the American Council on Education, or ACE, recommends that colleges and univerisities grant 6 college credits to students who score 50 or more.

Works from American authors, poets, and essayists are featured in this test, some of the more famous being Nathaniel Hawthorne, Toni Morrison, and Langston Hughes. In light of these works, students are often required to recognize the featured piece and answer questions related to the subject matter dealt with, whether it is a poem, novel, or other piece of literature.

Students should also be familiar with literary terminology when taking the CLEP American Literature, especially vocabulary relating to drama, storylines, and poetry.
